Gilo m. A hypocoristic of any of various names beginning with Proto-Germanic *gailaz 'merry, excited; beautiful; lush, lustful'.

The name was sometimes used as a nickname of Gilbert, as in the 1271 example of Giselbertus dictus Gillo (hennes-vol1, 218), and is also often confused with Giles.
