Most often a hypocoristic of any of various names beginning with Do-, formed by reduplication; however, in some rare cases it may also be Hebrew דּוֹדוֹ from Hebrew דּוֹד 'beloved'.
The Hebrew name was the name of a two, possibly three, obscure Old Testatment characters. Wycliffite Bible (1395): Dodan, Thola.
