Engelbert m. Old High German engil 'angel' or an elongation of Old Icelandic ing(i), of uncertain origin but perhaps identical with the god name Ing or Yngvi, also of uncertain origin, + Old German berhta 'bright'.

Forms of Engilbert and Ingalbert are often impossible to distinguish from each other.
