Ishmael m. Hebrew יִשְׁמָעֵאל 'God hears'.

The name of the Biblical son of Abraham and Hagar, and of a few other minor Biblical characters. Wycliffite Bible (1395): Ismael.

The Welsh name Isfael was sometimes spelled Ismael, which was then confused with Ishmael; these two names are distinct in origin.
