Dictionary of Medieval Names
from European Sources

Lombard m. Late Latin Longobardus, Langobardus 'Lombard', lit. 'long beard', derived from Proto-Germanic *langaz 'long' + Proto-Germanic *bardaz 'beard'.

The Langobards were a Germanic tribe who invaded Italy in the 6th C. The use of this term as a personal name reflects a trend in late-medieval/early Renaissance Italy for ethnic descriptives as given names.
